And wow did some people freak the fuck out.

Full disclosure: I admit that I made my first comment regarding Clarkson and his non-apology without knowing that he did in fact visit Tymon’s home to try and apologise. For that, I am truly sorry. I wasn’t aware that had happened.

That said.

What was printed here today on Jalopnik wasn’t an apology from Jeremy Clarkson to Tymon. Why? Because it did not say - anywhere - “I’m sorry that I punched you in the face.”

Here is the text as published today by Jalopnik:

““I would like to say sorry, once again, to Oisin Tymon for the incident and its regrettable aftermath,” Clarkson said.

The presenter was dropped by the BBC following the assault.

Clarkson, 55, added: “I want to reiterate that none of this was in any way his fault.

“I would also like to make it clear that the abuse he has suffered since the incident is unwarranted and I am sorry too that he has had to go through that.

“I am pleased that this matter is now resolved. Oisin was always a creatively exciting part of Top Gear and I wish him every success with his future projects.” “

The words “I apologise for my actions.” or “I’m sorry I punched Tymon in the face”, or “Tymon, please accept my apology for assaulting you” appear nowhere in that body of text. There is no recognition of his own responsibility.

He is apologising as if “the incident” happened in a vacuum; unrelated to anything that Jezza himself may have done.

Now, I know that may not be a popular opinion. And that’s fine. I’m a big boy, with a career, and responsibilities, and a life. I can handle being called out, or being held to answer for my opinion.

What I can’t condone is anybody - and there were a few - who felt the need to make a joke of the situation. All through the comments on the apology story there are people saying the Tymon deserved it, that the commenters feel Clarkson should pay TYmon and then hit him again, that Tymon derserved more than just a punch for ruining TopGear.

That’s a real issue. When people are more upset that their television show went away, than they are about the mental health of an assault victim, that shows a real problem with our fascination with celebrity culture. People actually see Clarkson as the victim here.

And that, is fucked up.

You’re acting like manchildren won’t flock to defend a fellow manchild.

Ha. Also, I think it was you who pointed out that Clarkson went to Tymon’s house. Thank you for the clarification. I truly didn’t know that.

“I would like to say sorry to Oisin for the incident”. Just because he doesn’t go into the definition of the incident doesn’t mean he didn’t directly apologize to Oisin. You are being pedantic. STFU already about it.

Well said. Clarkson’s non-apology apology may have more to do with legalese than anything else, though. I’ve never watched the show, nor do I follow it, so I don’t know the details of the assault or the settlement. He may have settled without actually admitting blame, so apologizing for assaulting him might violate the terms of that settlement.

/I am not a lawyer, nor did I sleep in a Holiday Inn Express last night.

To me incident is a word to encompass the punching and the verbal insulting. I didn’t think it needed word for word spelling out.

I gotta wonder if the cage language has to do with potential future litigation...

Still, fair points.

I think the answer is rather simple even if non-elegant. There was almost assuredly legal counsel before any public statement.

People freaked the fuck out because you’re actually right.

Words are meaningless when you (i.e. Clarkson) can’t man the fuck up and make it right with the person you caused problems for.

But that’s the society we live in – people limited to theoretical knowledge about human relations effectively deciding what’s ok and what isn’t.

Glad it’s not just me that can see through empty apologies and cheap gestures...
